In Hertfordshire five weeks ago, Joan Macan was murdered on her 81st birthday. Decorated for her work behind enemy lines in the Second World War, Mrs Macan later became well-known as a dog breeder and judged at Crufts this year. Dog lovers from all parts of the country visited her cottage in Berkhamsted and could help police with their hunt for the killer.
