David Koresh rose from obscurity to become the charismatic prophet of the Branch Davidian sect, a religious group based at the Mount Carmel compound in Waco, Texas. Suspected by FBI officers of weapons violations, a 51-day siege - the longest stand-off in American history - ended in tragedy with the death of 75 people in an apocalyptic fire.
