As the Hamelaars, accompanied by Nifterik, Tor and Madelein pass through the Damp van Wamp on their flying carpet, Bertram disappears and Clovis van Wamp appears in his place. Clovis tells them to take a shortcut by visiting the good witch Wenzela at her ice palace. Nifterik, however, is certain that Clovis is not acting like himself and suspects a trap.
