⭐⭐⭐⭐ (out of 5) Avenue 5 – Space tourism, stupidity, and the art of surviving other people’s incompetence. “Avenue 5” is a gloriously chaotic space comedy where confidence far outpaces competence. The setup is simple: a luxury space cruise takes a catastrophic detour, leaving its passengers stranded light-years from home — under the command of a captain who’s about as qualified as a toaster. Hugh Laurie plays him with pitch-perfect charm and bewilderment, balancing fake authority with flashes of reluctant brilliance. The real chaos, though, comes from the ship’s creator — a man so self-absorbed he makes the captain look competent by comparison. What follows is a masterclass in cosmic mismanagement, where every attempt to fix a problem just creates a bigger one, and survival depends more on luck than leadership. If you’re thinking this sounds like Red Dwarf re-imagined for the 21st century — you’re absolutely right. Avenue 5 trades grime for gloss and irony for absurdism, but the spirit is the same: people utterly unsuited for their situation somehow keeping the ship afloat. It’s British humour wrapped in American panic, with just enough sincerity to make the absurdity feel earned.
