Lew Archer, a former policeman, is a private detective who is not above bending the law when trying to solve a case. His friend, Lieutenant Brighton, helps him with information. The show was loosely based on the character Lew Archer in the Ross Macdonald novels.

However, the criminal has stolen the "Blood Money" from a St. Louis mobster who wants it back. The criminal dies following torture; the money is stolen from Archer's apartment; and the criminal's family is kidnapped. The detective will attempt to exchange counterfeit money to win the freedom of the hostages.
