An Idiot Abroad is a British travel documentary television series broadcast on Sky1 and Science, as well as spin-off books published by Canongate Books, created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant and starring Karl Pilkington. The ongoing theme of both the television series and the books is that Pilkington has no interest in global travel, so Merchant and Gervais make him travel while they stay in the United Kingdom and monitor his progress.

Dolphin SwimKarl travels to Australia to swim with dolphins, but the trip doesn't turn out as expected. On the way, he stops in Thailand, where he meets some ladyboys and gets attacked by monkeys. In Australia, he swims with sharks instead of dolphins.

Whale WatchingKarl isn’t really prepared for the arctic conditions in Alaska. Ricky and Steve have also planned some dog sledding, a meeting with Innuits and a visit to the North Pole. When Karl finally gets to catch his whale watching cruise, he learns that Ricky and Steve have stuck him on a deep sea fishing trawler.
Meet a Gorilla

Meet a GorillaKarl travels to Africa to see wild gorillas. Prior to visiting the gorillas, Ricky and Steve send Karl to teach at a school, rebuild a hut, go bungee jumping, visit a domesticated hippo, cook for a king, and go animal tracking.

Route 66Karl wants to drive along the legendary Route 66 in the USA in an open top Cadillac but Ricky and Steve have other ideas. Along the way they want him join a high school choir, hang out with New Age therapists, meet the Amish before ending his journey by Wingwalking.
Climb Mount Fuji

Climb Mount FujiKarl’s last “thing to do” is seeing Japan’s most spiritual destination: Mount Fuji. On arrival in Japan Karl gets lost in Tokyo. Ricky and Steve put him up in a ‘capsule’ hotel, send him to a Sumo wrestling stable, arrange for Karl to meet a Zen Master and send him on the world’s steepest rollercoaster. And he has to attempt to climb Mount Fuji.
