The largest famine in Egypt

During the Fatimid era in Egypt, and during the reign of Caliph Al-Mustansir, circumstances conspired and formed an alliance against the Egyptians. Internal fighting between the various army divisions, the interventions of King Rasd (Al-Mustansir's mother), the decline in the Nile water level, and the spread of epidemics all led to the outbreak of what is known as the "Mustansir Famine" - a famine that forced the Egyptians to eat dogs and cats... and then eat each other.
