The story centred on widowed journalist Dan Wells, who is sailing the Pacific with on his 25-metre schooner "Seaspray", with his three children Mike, Noah and Sue, assisted by their Fijian crewman.

Bored, he puts a message in a bottle claiming that he's being held against his will on the Seaspray and tosses it overboard. The bottle is found and the Fijian police take the note seriously, since a native chief's son has been reported missing. The boy decided to stowaway on the Seaspray and the Captain Wilder is arrested for kidnapping him.
