The more False Positive tries to turn pregnancy into a source of horror, the more it reminds you how much better this premise has been handled before. Ilana Glazer gives Lucy a strong performance as her sense of control slowly slips away, and the film works best when that loss feels intimate rather than simply frightening. There are some effective stretches of tension as Lucy begins questioning the motives of the men surrounding her, but the influence of Rosemary's Baby is impossible to ignore. The film borrows so heavily from familiar pregnancy-horror territory that its own ideas about women's autonomy struggle to feel as fresh as they should. Lucy’s growing suspicion should be where the film really takes off, yet the story starts losing its grip just when it needs to become more focused. Its commentary on reproductive control is worthwhile, but the film rarely trusts the horror to make those points on its own. John Lee's clinical framing and occasional surreal imagery give the film a distinct visual identity, but they can't fully compensate for writing that repeatedly feels more familiar than unsettling. The pacing drags in places, and the increasingly bizarre turns toward the end never come together as cleanly as they should. Glazer's performance and a handful of genuinely uncomfortable moments show there was a better movie somewhere inside False Positive, but what made it to the screen feels too derivative and uneven to fully justify itself.
