A.D. Police should have been an easy win for me—set in the same universe as Bubblegum Crisis and sharing the same premise of a specialized police unit fighting rogue boomers, it had all the ingredients I normally enjoy. But for reasons I still can’t fully pin down, this series just didn’t work for me. Maybe it was the flatter character designs, which lacked the grit and personality of the earlier OVA. Maybe it was the overall production quality, which felt noticeably weaker and less atmospheric. Or maybe it’s simply that A.D. Police Files set such a high bar with its darker tone, sharper writing, and more mature storytelling that this series felt like a diluted version in comparison. The episodes tried to explore similar themes—technology, morality, corruption—but without the same weight or emotional impact. In the end, it never clicked with me, and remains one of the few cyberpunk anime entries I couldn’t connect with.
