The action is okay, but is outdone by other action staples. The character of Leon is a bit buffonish and Natalie Portman's character is a bit off-putting. But man, Gary Oldman rocks.

- pipanni13 juli 2026Some great scenes and a peak Gary Oldman make for a nice action movie, but there are also very cringy and awkward scenes in the interaction between the two leads. A possible remake should probably feature a couple with not such a big age gap, if you get my drift. Anyway this is still a good movie, and it's incredible how talented Natalie Portman already was at such a young age.

Director Luc Besson creates an intoxicating, almost fairy-tale atmosphere in the gritty urban setting, highlighted by the lush, moody cinematography. The Bad The central relationship involving the young Mathilda (Natalie Portman) is highly problematic, bordering on uncomfortable, despite intentions. The script relies heavily on genre archetypes, occasionally sacrificing nuance for dramatic impact. Furthermore, the film's tone shifts abruptly between stylized action and maudlin sentimentality, which can feel jarring. A flawed but undeniably magnetic piece of 90s action cinema, propelled by two iconic performances. See it for the atmosphere and the acting clashes!

I think Jean Reno is solely responsible for saving this movie from tipping over the edge to disgusting, this could have been Besson at his very worst.
