The virtuoso bureaucrat Petukhov finds himself in an incredible situation: after returning from his bride after a three-day absence, he discovers that he was buried, and on completely legal grounds. The body of a man who died under a car (a pickpocket who stole a wallet from Petukhov) was mistaken for Petukhov's body. In an attempt to prove his existence in the usual bureaucratic ways, Petukhov begins to obtain a certificate that he is alive.
