First off, I appreciate Prime Video for investing in comedies like this, because basically no one is making throwbacks like this with big name stars anymore. And I’d say this wedding clash comedy, written and directed by Nicholas Stoller, who made Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Bros, is like a B- echo of his previous work, which falls neatly into the 2000s and 2010s Apatow genre. Compete with the R rating and abundance of punchy swearing. Which by the way Reese Witherspoon is great at. She's acerbic but still magnetic in all the right ways. It kind of makes me mad she hasn't been making comedies like this her whole career. And the rest of the cast is full of killers including Rory Scovel, Jimmy Tatro, Keyla Monterosso Mejia, and Jack McBrayer. But was it funny? Well, it did get some chuckles out of me throughout, mostly from the smaller moments in the first half of the film. But I’d say it was as laugh out loud hilarious as I was hoping for. Though Stoller does deserve credit for servicing a lot of characters with full emotional arcs. That said I think the humor is way too broad and contrived at times, which clashed with the genuine grounded emotion Stoller was going for elsewhere. Some of the big comedy set pieces are just straight up cringeworthy and Stoller didn’t have a handler on switching back and forth from big comedy to emotional and dramatic. Also some of the plot mechanics, require big logic leaps from the audience. In the end this was a mixed bag that I don’t regret watching but I probably wouldn’t be quick to recommend, unless you REALLY love Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon.
