Young Woman and the Sea Ratings & Reviews
- Kevin WardJuly 1, 2025This is another one of those sports dramas that just hits all the right beats and nearly always works for me. Daisy Ridley and Stephen Graham were both very good. I’m sure the truth has been dramatized and Disneyfied beyond all recognition, but it certainly made for an inspiring and compelling watch. My only minor gripe was the final scene where Daisy cheesy smiling and waiving in front of an really obvious green screen ticker tape parade. Thought it was a kind of a visually unappealing scene to end on for a film that otherwise looked absolutely beautiful throughout.

- HakihikoJune 25, 2025Inspiring and Beautifully Told "Young Woman and the Sea" is a powerful and emotionally resonant film that celebrates resilience, determination, and the pursuit of the impossible. It tells the true story of Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel, and does so with heart, elegance, and purpose. The movie shines thanks to a heartfelt performance by Daisy Ridley, who brings both vulnerability and fierce strength to the role. Her portrayal makes you feel every setback, every triumph, and every stroke in the water. The supporting cast is equally solid, grounding the story in believable relationships and emotional stakes. Visually, the film captures both the beauty and danger of the sea with stunning cinematography, while the direction keeps the narrative tight and engaging throughout. The emotional payoff is strong, and the film avoids becoming overly sentimental by focusing on the raw determination of its lead character. The pacing is steady, the emotional arc satisfying, and the message-about fighting for recognition and breaking barriers-comes through clearly and powerfully. Overall, a touching, inspirational film that honors a groundbreaking woman in sports history with sincerity and grace.
