X-Men: First Class Ratings & Reviews
- Dragonbearwizard2d agoI held off on watching this movie for a while because according to reviews this was the best X-men movie yet ! unfortunately i must disagree. after watching the complete schlok action adventure that was wolverine origins this movie focuses a little more on characters, development but ultimately still chews through all of that to establish the status quo, overarching humans VS mutants plot. it's like someone made an outline for the story's structure and they used that raw, you jump from one plot to the next and things just happen because they need to happen. it feels INCREDIBLY forced. and the costumes feel off, the CGI is okay but full beast looks weird and cheap compared to his previous appearance, so does mystique in her blue form, her hair looks like a cheap wig with hairspray in it and her scales look like foam. the saving grace was magneto, he is a handsome devil, his motivations were actually clear, the ending on the beach was a joke though, afwull way to tie a bow in it. his helmet looked good, the rest of his outfit looked a bit sh*t. i also have some complaints about the logic, i'm pretty sure emma frost's skin turns to diamond but magneto cracks her neck with a piece of tubing ? the secret lair to the super secret meeting spot for super secret global villains trying to start world war 3 is a rotating wall in a publicly available booth in a publicly available club and you just press the ashtray in the middel on top of the table to get in ? many such conveniences happen just to push the story forward, it's sloppy and lazy, i know making movies is hard but it's bad when it takes me out of the movie.
- M08YJanuary 25, 2026That's a bit more like what I'm talking about. After 2 X-Men disasters in a row, First Class was a bit of a return to form. Completely re-casting was a bold move for Fox, but distancing itself from X-men: Last Stand was an incredibly smart move. First Class takes us back to the 60s and is set during the Cuban missile crisis. We get to see Professor-X and Magneto meet for the first time and also see (what turns out to be the beginning of) the rift that divides them. The casting is genuinely excellent. McAvoy and Fassbender are superbly cast here. Jennifer Lawrence... is also here. Kevin Bacon, January Jones and Jason Flemyng round out our villains while Álex González stands there with CGI tornadoes... Seriously, give him something to do. All of this is not to say that the film is perfect. It glosses over some really interesting ideas and falls into trying to be a little quickly at times (Usually at the hands of Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique). The scene were they make up their super hero names was genuinely painful. One or two poorly aged special effects aside, the audio and visuals are solid. Not particularly beautiful, but solid.
