- Kevin WardJuly 2, 2025Wish is a film that attempts to evoke the spirit of Disney animated musicals past. Though technically combining 2D & 3D animation, it’s very much styled to look more like a 2D animated film. The textures and line work and colors a gorgeous and if you’re a fan of classic Disney Animation, it’s worth seeing this displayed on the big screen. Starring Ariana DeBose as Asha, a hopeful apprentice-to-be of Magnifico (Chris Pine), the sorcerer King of Rosas who has the ability to grant wishes. But when Asha discovers during her interview with Magnifico that most of the Kingdom’s wishes he has no intention of ever granting, she becomes determined to return them wishes. Asha wishes upon a star (poetic given the Disney 100th anniversary) and the star comes down to magically aid in his quest. I absolutely loved DeBose in West Side Story. She was easily my favorite part of that film. Here she shows off her amazing vocal talent again. The featured song This Wish, is easily the one song with the best hook. My favorite song was actually the duet At All Costs with Chris Pine. It features some really great harmonization. Out of the theater, those were the songs that stuck with me. I imagine if my daughter plays the soundtrack 100 times, the other songs will be committed to memory as well. Under the thematic banner of holding onto your wishes, there is an odd subtext of anti-corporation, pro union, messaging. Magnifico even feels a bit like the embodiment of trickle down economics. I may be misremembering but I even feel like they refer to the people of Rosas as shareholders at one point in the film. Not that I disagree with the messaging it’s just very odd coming from The House of Mouse.
