Wicked Ratings & Reviews
- roperm2d agoBeautifully done and soars particularly (no pun intended) in rousing fashion in the last quarter.
- zgluvs24July 24, 2025Although I’m not really fond of musicals and I watched this quite a bit late, I still enjoyed it and found it really interesting, I finished it at 2am the storyline and theme is genuinely great^^ I love the story and characters, I at first wondered why there was a “Part One” infront of the movie tittle but finishing the movie solves my mystery! lol 😂
- rossn21July 23, 2025All I have to say is 💅🧙👸. Music story and cinematography are fantastic. In my top 5 movies.
- Ike EyidahJuly 14, 2025I’m not a lover of musicals or recollect much about the Wizard of Oz, but I did find this an entertaining fantasy, full of colour. I did find the singing off putting but the story still holds. I guess, if you like Beauty and the Beast you’ll love this too.
- vangh1December 13, 2024Every musical number is simply magical, choreography, performance, and set design all come together to make everything look and feel seamless and effortless when of course it's anything but. Both lead performances feel exactly perfect for the character, you get who they are and you buy in. I'm not generally a fan of the whole "Part 1" and "Part 2" release trend (if you're a movie, be a movie. If you're not, be a series) but at least this one warned us on the title card.
- Ross GuerinJuly 8, 2025Saw the theatre productions years ago and remembered enjoying it, but I think this made it even better. Set production, cosine design and of course the incredible cast really make this something to watch on a big screen as loud as possible. Themes are more relevant than ever and I think the director knows this and really ramped it up. Found it pulled at the heart strings more than we anticipated.
- Spaceman JoeJuly 6, 2025Best part was the last 30 min and the last song 🔥
- rg9400January 1, 2025Wicked's marketing intentionally hides that it is a Part 1, with none of the official posters or titles using that subtitle. However, as soon as the title card appears, it's clear this is just one half of a larger story. And it feels like it. However, I will say that unlike Dune, this movie does have a climactic ending that seems like a natural peak to the central character arc in this movie. Regardless, coming in at 2 hours and 40 minutes, this half is as long as the entire Broadway musical. Now, I haven't seen the Broadway play or read the book, so I can't really comment on what it adds to flesh out the story. However, it does feel its length, with a variety of scenes feeling a bit superfluous. Because they are clearly saving up major conflicts and moments for the second half, there also seems to be a lot of arcs that feel underserved within this movie. It's hard to comment on the setup done in this movie without seeing the second part, but that in of itself is a natural flaw in deciding to split it into two. I thought the interactions between Galinda and Elphaba were great, but I wasn't as engaged when Fiyero or Nessa were on screen. I think the movie could have spent more time developing some of the sociopolitical commentary. I liked the concepts, but they felt very surface-level in the movie. For such a long movie, it almost feels easy to forget they even exist considering the limited screentime. I get that the focus is on Elphaba, but her story easily parallels those elements. A few other comments from my side. I'll readily admit that this type of music is not my taste, and I found most of the songs either forgettable or annoying, but I liked the choreography in them. I think the set design and costuming is really great, but the lighting ruined so much of it. It feels way too brightened, washing away all the contrast and bright colors. I was the most impressed with Ariana Grande. I went in with very low expectations, but her performance and comedic timing was fantastic and the highlight of the movie for me. Overall, this is an entertaining movie that feels underserved by the decision to split the story into two movies.
- parktool69December 31, 2024Perfection. They killed every part of this. Didn't care for the guy from bridgerton. His face freaks me out.
- Curtis JonesMarch 9, 2025I didn’t know anything about this movie but I was NOT disappointed. I loved it. What an emotional roller coaster! 5/5
- stuhannafordJuly 2, 2025As a lover of the theatre production, and very fond of the books, I was excited to see how it translated to the screen. For me, it falls into the ‘good’ category. Nowhere near the hype, but also much better than some of the negative press would have you believe. The bad. It’s long, and I mean very long. It owes much of that to being overindulgent, with enormously long scenes that add little to the story, or indeed enjoyment, at regular intervals. The second issue for me, was Grande, and it was a grande problem. I found it difficult to watch her throughout, but the most problematic issue was her lack of comic timing. So many of the scripts’ very best lines, drop in her lap, but land poorly. She comes across as robotic, instead of indifferent and aloof. Any notion of being naively unaware of herself and surroundings, just doesn’t come across. As per Mamma Mia, there are a few stars that suffer the Brosnan Effect and should stick to acting, and not singing. Lastly, there is the ‘woke’ issue. Not the one where it’s lazily accused of being ‘liberalised’, without knowledge that the source material is already very progressive. It’s the fact that even with such a base, the film tries to almost eradicate any male, masculinity of any kind. With the exception of Goldblum, pretty much every man is at best ‘camp’, with the lead, for want of a better phrase, ‘queerbaiting’ at every turn, and it feels unnecessary. The story itself is already about acceptance, difference, persecution, a loss of voice, and the inverse of them all. And as with so many Hollywood movies of the past 5-10 years, the overcorrection is noticeable, even for a musical. All that said, there are many positives. It’s bright, beautiful, and well performed as a musical throughout. It’s an important story that discusses difficult topics with a high degree of gloss and sheen, cleverly covering what’s underneath. There are also important themes about not believing everything you are told, from both sides of the spectrum. Goldblum adds his usual, awkward and odd style, to great effect. However, if for no other reason, see it for Erivo. Captivating, simply put. Ignore the outside political noises, and some of the less than perfect PR moments… watch the performer and you’ll find yourself magically drawn in. Bewitching.
- Lindsay Ashton-SmithApril 17, 2025Amazing. Can't wait for part 2
- DKonPlexJuly 1, 2025this film was really gay.
- David Watkins Sr.June 8, 2025loved this show (even if it was a little too long).
- Kevin WardJuly 1, 2025Everyone will be talking about Ariana and Cynthia’s performances, and rightfully so. But honestly, Peter Dinklage is goated. An extravagant and proper musical with stellar vocal performances from the leading ladies. Gorgeous costumes. Ariana delivers much of the films humorous beats, Cynthia drives home the emotional core, but together the duo harmonize for a truly magical package. For sure felt the length near the end, but at the same time I would have sat for two more hours to watch the conclusion immediately. Guess I’ll just have to wait out the year-long intermission. Loved it.
