- RazorbitzFebruary 22, 2025Not as lowbrow as you'd think. Went in with extremely low expectations and came away pleasantly surprised. White Chicks is smarter than anyone seems to credit for, and despite suffering from the usual slapstick comedy antics of the time, it handles the inherent goofiness of the scenario with charm and self-awareness that had me laughing far more than expected. No high art, but a good time that pokes fun at everything including itself; whats not to love? The uncanny horror of the prosthetic work done is something to study, and underneath the ridiculous makeup and humor I appreciated the willingness of the film to riff on the typical machismo scene of the 00's and the inherent predatory culture that was inescapable at the time. I was more surprised by the ending, in which not only the domineering girlfriend was placated with a genuine moral lesson the duo gained on their journey despite having every opportunity to embrace more baffoonery, but also have the two brothers be embraced by the women they had swindled and driving off into the sunset with them in a wonderful conclusion to a running gag throughout the film. Sure, its all for comedy's sake--but an unexpectedly wholesome and platonic ending that doesn't involve the outright objectification of every woman in a ten mile radius was something else for a movie of this era. Another note of surprising restraint was in the "unrated" deleted scene that I don't want to spoil, but must have been a shock and dissapointment for any who rented this out back in the day expecting some titilation. For me though it just added to my appreciation for White Chicks. Dated though it is, its a unique comedy that would rather have the humor be pointed inwards than anywhere else, even if its nuances were and still are lost on any who go in expecting something more along the lines of American Pie and its ilk. There are certainly some dumb jokes that don't land, and I personally couldn't stand the "rival" agents that battle wits with them throughout. Still, rarely did Terry Crews or the Wayans brothers ever fail to deliver on some sort of gag that made me laugh. I cannot emphasize enough how refreshing it was that the jokes were often on the main characters and through no fault but their own. Messy ending not withstanding, I will die on the hill that White Chicks is pretty good and endearing. Its faults are its charms and I hope with time people give White Chicks the appreciation its due.
