Westward the Women Ratings & Reviews
Mister Arn
May 16, 2025
This is a '50s western, starting with the typical depiction of women you would expect. As the story progresses, everything changes. Women become more self-sufficient and capable than men. In this movie, it's the women who are heroic.
New York Daily News
Kate Cameron
All the parts in the film are well played, under William Wellman's direction. The latter has a way of making these pictures of the old West come alive. He gives each scene a touch of realism that heightens the illusion of the story.
Variety
William Brogdon
Schnee's screenplay of the Capra story is best in its use of dialog. Words given the players all have meaning and never appear to be just talk filling in between the action.
Washington Star
Jay Carmody
The hardships which provide the exciting incident of Westward the Women are the familair ones of such trips.
Washington Post
Richard L. Coe
Charles Schnee, the script writer, and William A. Wellman, the director, have overdone their contributions... had they lopped off half an hour from their running time... Westward the Women would have been a better picture.
Motion Picture Herald (Exhibitors Herald)
Fred Hift
It is a Western that'll have 'em gap ing and laughing and perhaps crying in spots.
Christian Science Monitor
Rod Nordell
Hardship plays a considerable part in the drama. William A Wellman has directed the well photographed incidents with an eye to action and to the more obvious situation giving opportunity for a display of womanly emotions.
Photoplay
Sara Hamilton
A powerful Western.
Boston Globe
Marjory Adams
No matter how closely or how loosely it is based on actual incident, is engrossing cinema.
Harrison's Reports
P.S. Harrison
The picture offers much excitement and many thrills.
Honolulu Advertiser
Advertiser Staff
Western scripters have come up with a refreshing switch in Westward the Women.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Myles Standish
Director Willam Wellman has compromised some of his more vigorous scenes with touches of hokum, so instead of brutal realism, we have only a theatrical imitation thereof.
Fort Worth Star-Telegram/DFW.com
Mack Williams
Westward the Women is an entertaining romance.
Illustrated Daily News (Los Angeles)
David Bongard
MGM's off-beat style of western has a good many chuckles in general and a more particular study of the method our forefathers used in outfitting an expedition to a new golden state.
Philadelphia Inquirer
Mildred Martin
Neither William A. Wellman's direction nor the Charles Schnee script based on a Frank Capra story give the film much conviction. But it does cover a lot of ground.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Win Fanning
Frankly, the greatest obstacle in the path of the women in this epic is the script.
San Francisco Examiner
Hortense Morton (Screen Scout)
The story is one of feminine valor.
Newsweek
Newsweek Staff
It is no distortion of history to demonstrate that the American woman comes through with a magnificent display of resourcefulness and courage, but there isn't much leeway in all this action for the gentler art of acting.
Miami Herald
George Bourke
Westward the Women is an outstanding motion picture -- one of the season's top 10.
Los Angeles Times
Philip K. Scheuer
Westward is entertaining, mind you. It's just no epic.
