Victoria—the obedient, pampered, withdrawn, clumsy, and gangly only daughter of the prestigious and wealthy widower Dr. Agustín Rueda—lives a quiet, uneventful life with her father and the ever-devoted Aunt Fina. Her life changes when she meets Mauricio at her cousin Susana's graduation party; he is a charming millionaire who has fallen on hard times and works as a freelance photographer, and the two fall in love. However, Agustín is far from pleased with the romance, viewing Mauricio as a fortune hunter; when Mauricio asks for Victoria's hand in marriage, the doctor demands that the couple stop seeing each other for six months. Victoria refuses to accept this condition, and the father-daughter relationship fractures. Eventually, with Fina's help, they travel to Acapulco to try to mend fences; Agustín ultimately relents but warns his daughter that he will not attend the wedding. Upon returning to Mexico City, Victoria and Mauricio reunite and decide to call off the formal wedding and elope instead. However, at the airport and on the verge of boarding a plane, Mauricio reconsiders the plan—realizing that eloping would automatically disinherit Victoria—and leaves her stranded. Agustín is relieved by the breakup and tells his daughter he is proud of her, yet Victoria maintains a cold, reproachful attitude toward him—one that does not change even when the doctor suffers a fatal car accident.
