In 1920s Germany, twin sisters Lotte and Anna are cruelly separated after their mother's death. Lotte finds refuge in her affluent Dutch aunt's home, while Anna faces hardship on a rural German farm. As WWII looms, their fates intertwine, leading to a poignant reunion in old age.
