- StairwaytothestarsNovember 17, 2025With a wheeling dealing sophisticated intellectual 14-year-old Matty Ross played by Hailee Steinfeld, and a showcase for the ultimate storyteller of the Frontier, gruffy, grumpy, and guttural Rooster Cogburn played by Jeff Bridges who has a natural Western fit in this gritty remake of TRUE GRIT. Unfortunately, the Coen brothers did not strike oil, because their boots were walking but the soles wore out too quickly, and it didn't pack the cowboy punch it needed! Let's just say that my petticoat wasn't twirling. The donkey scene steals the movie with its humor and compassion showing that Rooster Cogburn is not such an old cock after all! But then, he stabs a horse, so Rooster is still an old cock!

- Scott SmithFebruary 1, 2025A very solid, and often humorous, western from the Coen Brothers. Bridges is great in the lead role, with Stanfield and Damon excellent in their supporting roles. I've watched this one a couple times now, and it always holds up.

The grit she seeks in another is at the heart of her quest and thirst for revenge. Her strong will animates two souls and leads them to heroism. A price is paid in the end. The arm of vengeance is not to be waved about by mere mortals. One question remains, at the end: was this what all her life ever was about? Was she ever someone beyond her desire for retribution? Or did her father's and his killer's death both dry up her soul, so that love never found purchase in her heart? Sensational film. Steinfeld is like a kid goat here. Hayley Joel Osment level of this kid is fucking great. Bridges does tremendous work oscillating between heroic, pathetic and melancholic, and Damon shows his supporting chops brilliantly. The part that most deserves praise is the language, which is a Coen staple. The script overall is superb, but the dialogue is leagues above an incredible amount of films from this century. Coens: masters of tone.
