Two firefighters (played by Bill Paxton and William Sadler) find a map that leads to stolen gold. It's located in a huge abandoned factory. Unfortunately it also happens to be where a band of black drug dealers have their headquarters. Soon it's blacks vs. whites to the death. A dynamite thriller on full throttle--full of non-stop swearing, plenty of gun fights and gruesome killings. The plot doesn't really make a lot of sense but once this movie kicks into gear you won't care. The action is virtually non-stop and there's a loud pounding music score that propels the movie along. There's also some intentionally funny humor in here so it's always clear that this is not to be taken seriously. The acting is mostly just OK--but who watches this for the acting? Paxton is the only one who gives a really good performance. The only debit here is that the movie constantly keeps switching from color to b&w (the POV of a gang member filming all this). It's jarring and unnecessary. This was a bomb at the box office and didn't hit it big on video either. That's really too bad because it's one of director Walter Hills best film. Tough, violent and exciting. An 8 all the way.

Hill is one of the most proficient directors in Hollywood when it comes to using editing as an expressive tool.
Film Frenzy
Matt Brunson
In his best action films, director Walter Hill employs an economic, fast-paced style that obscures whatever faults might be found in the script. He works that magic again with Trespass.

In [Walter] Hill's hands, a whole feast of beloved actors have a chance to have a great time being bad.

A flawed but tense action pic that plays out as a morality tale.

A disappointing misfire...
Hartford Courant

The modern master of the action genre, a disciple of the dynamic Sam Peckinpaugh, keeps things moving at a bracing clip.
TIME Magazine
There's something bracing about the utter amorality of Trespass.
TV Guide
While Trespass might have been more compelling, it still displays far more style and intelligence than the average contemporary action thriller.
Entertainment Weekly
Owen Gleiberman
In a season dominated by bloated blockbuster wannabes, it's easy to respond to the lean-and-mean B-movie pleasures of Trespass.
Variety
Variety Staff
Director Walter Hill's handling of the action is fluid and kinetic, making the film a pleasure to watch for the expertness of its craft.

Hill stages some typically electric action scenes.

An intense and unique action-thriller with that distinct Walter Hill touch.
Film Journal International

Fast-moving pulp

Everything in the screenplay seems arbitrary, including the firefighting jobs assigned to the two would-be treasure-seekers. They could as easily be magazine salesmen or amateur songwriters.

Does Trespass have any lasting significance? No. Does it do anything particularly well? No, only skillfully.
Austin Chronicle
Marc Savlov
Hill has obviously tried to make a hip, ultra-violent actioneer, but what he ends up with is more a choppy, ultimately boring pastiche involving endless shots of automatic weapons fire and peoples' legs pumping furiously as they scramble...
Washington Post
Hal Hinson
It's mindlessly violent, profane and insultingly racist. It's also relentless, repetitious and tiresome, and leaves us feeling that a once-great director has run out of ammunition.
