Tontolini is the lover of the wife of one of his friends, a painter; and he is terrified of being discovered by her husband. We can imagine his terror when from his window he sees the painter vigorously cutting with an immense ax a body, which Tontolini believes to be that of his mistress. He surprises the assassin, but everything is explained when we discover that the artist had only murdered his mannequin.
