Where to Watch Wiedźmy
- Ecto-1A3 dni temu🧙🏼♀️ Wonderfully wicked, beautifully atmospheric and over far too soon 🫣 The Witches is one of those films that, while not necessarily horror, disguises itself remarkably well as one, much like the antagonists in this wonderfully adapted Roald Dahl story. Dahl’s novel spends considerably more time establishing its world before the main hotel plot begins. The grandmother explains how witches operate, how to recognize them and recounts several disturbing cases involving children who vanished or were transformed. The film handles much of this material effectively, but the book allows those stories to build the menace gradually rather than simply delivering the necessary information and sprinting toward Anjelica Huston removing her face. While the movie rushes toward the main event, it captures the novel’s atmosphere remarkably well, particularly the hotel, the convention and the grotesque witches, but it trims much of the mythology and replaces the book’s substantial aftermath with a quick magical reversal. The result is a film that builds wonderfully, peaks spectacularly and then behaves as though the theater manager has informed everyone that another screening starts in four minutes. Adapting an entire book into a feature-length film is never easy. Include everything and you end up with an eight-to-ten-hour production; cut too much and the ending arrives before the audience has had time to process what just happened. Then again, good luck getting moviegoers to sit through even a 90-minute film without checking their phones or demanding an intermission for snacks and bathroom breaks.
