The Ward Ratings & Reviews
- ርልዪረFebruary 14, 2025I love the work of John Carpenter, he definitely uses many visual techniques that excite the senses (see his original classics like THE THING, HALLOWEEN and ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK). This movie has a great soundtrack which reminded me of Carpenter's classics from the 1980s and the atmosphere created in this tense asylum thriller really makes this stunning. Amber Heard is just mesmerising as the lead character Kristen and this movie depicts her story as she is taken into a mental asylum and attempts to escape. THE WARD is part jail-break escape movie, part mystery thriller and part horror ride. It has a great twist, which would've been predictable if this was made by another director, however Carpenter handles the thrilling chase, scares and direction with such skill that you genuinely feel the shocks and surprises, the ending is totally believable, and like a lot of the horror movies Carpenter has made, this has excellent human drama, the entire cast of actors and actresses are excellent. A must see movie for horror and thriller fans and an easy 4 stars from me.
- FenrisfilOctober 4, 2025Last and sadly least of John Carpenter's movies. To be fair, the directing is very good. But this isn't a Carpenter script, a Carpenter soundtrack or a Carpenter edit. This wasn't the glorious return to directing a feature that his fans had hoped for after his two excellent "Masters of Horror" episodes. Instead it was a pretty generic horror story with some good directing that never once felt like a John Carpenter movie.
- SniffinTroutAugust 8, 2025Most confusing watch ever, Jumpscare at end kinda pissed me off with how bad the film was to begin with
- Lindsay DunlapDecember 13, 2025what a waste of time. don't bother.
- Vincent ReggianniniNovember 29, 2025It’s John Caroenter’s official swan song, and I’m betting I wasn;t the only one disappointed as this movie just peter’s out halfway through. I can’t get into Carpenter’s mind, but it feels like he just wanted an old-fashioned thriller, horror movie. Amber Heard is silly and plastic, and never really holds your attention other than to wonder why she got so famous in the first place, Jared Harris is always an actor of interest, but I am guessing this was one of his first roles and it suffers from a poor conception and fleshing out. You get the feeling that Carpenter is trying to add numerous scenes that would end up fun and quirky, giving each character a chance to highlight their particular brand of insanity but it just comes across as forced and unimaginative.
- Tina ChevalierSeptember 25, 2025It was slow going but definitely some parts that made me jump out of my skin.
