La Chapelle du Diable Notations et commentaires
- KGM SOSA2 mars 2026I was kinda stuck between giving this a 6/10 (Decent / Okay movie with some good bits) or a 7/10 (Good / Enjoyable / Worth watching once or twice), after sitting with it for a few moments before beginning to write this review I’ve decided to give it a 7/10 because it had a compelling & fairly unique story, awesome ‘monster’ design & some decent acting, & mostly because I’ve seen it before & liked it a lot more the first time. Firstly by “compelling & fairly unique story” I mean that it did have a captivating plot, I was certainly bought into the plot, it was also fairly unique in the sense that although the plot device of evil infiltrating Catholicism is very overused even by films I love, this film had its own distinctive spin on it, for example, instead of using an evil nun like every other faith based horror movie this drew on the idea of an evil deity masquerading as the Virgin Mary, which is extremely underused, I also like how they set up this premise & tied her to a past person (or satanic worshipper or whatever). Next is the ‘monster’ design for a lack of a better description as it’s actually a deity of religious sorts, but its design was actually pretty effectively scary looking throughout, the design was good & probably this movies saving grace in terms of horror, there’s not much more I can elaborate here but it’s by FAR the best part of the movie, I did prefer the look of it when it had the hood on masking the face with shadow, but even when light penetrated through I liked the look of her both in masked & unmasked form. Lastly the acting from our 3 main characters Gerry, Alice & Father Hagan was extremely competent; Gerry is played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan who is in tons of movies & series, you’ve certainly seen him in something. Father Hagan is recognisable to me from the series ‘Power’ playing Tommy Egan’s father. Alice played by Cricket Brown however deserves the most praise due to having a shockingly short resume of films under her belt, from what I understand she mostly has done short low budget films before this but she was exceptional in this. There’s a vulnerability & sincerity to her portrayal that is compelling, she captured emotional moments flawlessly, it feels almost criminal that she hasn’t been cast in more major roles, I blame Hollywood “politics” because on pure merit she demands far more roles than she’s received. Where this film does suffer though is it really isn’t scary enough, the few times it “goes for it” in terms of scares it executes it flawlessly, the problem is it is rather sparing in its moments of horror/terror & jumpscares, this is probably a positive thing for many people but for me I was left wanting a few more scares than I was given. I also found it lacked tension, I virtually felt no tension, I just didn’t feel invested in the moments that tried to set up tension & that’s probably because I didn’t feel invested in the characters at all except for Alice, she provided the only real sense of tension & investment from me, the other actors were good don’t get me wrong, but their characters were neither likeable or unlikeable, they just simply existed to move the story along. I have other minor gripes too but overall I’m not going to cherry pick, this wasn’t certainly decent, but not exceptional nor groundbreaking, just decent; Interestingly, from what I’ve seen on IMDB everybody agrees with me, audience consensus seems unusually aligned on this one. Most ratings fall between 4–7 out of 10, with very few extremes on either end. It’s rare to see that level of agreement, whereas most movies have evenly spread audience ratings, so everybody agrees this is average to upper average. To summarise, The Unholy is decent, occasionally strong, but never fully transcendent.
- makdelart18 décembre 2025The subject matter is very good, but the execution is rubbish.
