The Unbelievable Truth Ratings & Reviews
Desmond Dale
January 24, 2025
The Unbelievable Truth is one of those rare films that doesn't adhere to adhere conventions, it's not concerned fitting or staying within any one box. It's a character driven film with a very eclectic mix of personalities. Each character kind of embodies a certain philosophy. There's a stoic, an optimist, a pessimistic progressive, etc. Each character has a trait that feels blown up in an interesting way. Rather than being flattened to be static, the characters in the film are kind of warped exaggerations like subjects in a Picasso painting. The film has a rawness to it coupled with a strong vision. It's refreshing to find a film that really nails life in the lower class of society ie common society. It depicts a bunch of good people with numerous flaws dealing with less than ideal situations and just trying to claw their way to fleeting moments of happiness and togetherness.

In this lyrically offbeat fable, Hartley, the most Godardian of American indies, takes the audience to familiar-looking yet utterly strange places, like working class Long Island, where his bizarrely charming romance takes place; still his best film.

Hilarious black comedy.

Strange little tale that may prove to grow on you.
Chicago Sun-Times
Roger Ebert
What makes the film fun is the deadpan, tongue-in-cheek humor that undermines the seemingly sincere dramatic scenes.
