The Ugly Stepsister Ratings & Reviews
- FigueiragamesJuly 1, 2025To much gore for me its not violent but is auto mutilation...
- Allie TranMay 26, 2025A genius take that puts a body horror twist on the story of Cinderella. A blend of morbidity and beauty using artistic visuals and a nostalgic feel with the practical effects. Also… the tapeworm scene?! Insane.
- Kevin WardJune 30, 2025Possibly my favorite adaptation of this story. I loved the body horror. Not only did the effects look effectively gruesome, but they really drives home the message of the impossible ideals of beauty. Lea Myren is excellent as Elvira, the titular stepsister. Your empathy for her carries the film and really makes the POV shift away from the classic Cinderella story work. Unique take that doesn’t even change much from the classic tale as I thought it would. Highly recommend, if you can stomach it. Slutt.
- parcolanJune 9, 2025Perfect parody even/mostly applicable for the time that we live in 💋
- RiveraMediaServerJune 3, 2025What a bizarre , tragic twist of a Cinderella story. I enjoyed it. It definitely made me squirm!
- cultfilmlikerMay 19, 2025Shoulda known when there was blackhead popping early on that I was in for some intense body horror smh Another terror of a spaghetti-eating scene akin to The Killing of a Sacred Deer and obviously Gummo. Quite possibly the worst one!! Phenomenal music. Wonderful adaptation. This is what Disney needs!
- ah8313May 11, 2025Great reimagining of a classic tale for us horror fans
- thereelvoiceApril 30, 2025A timeless tale retold from its dark roots, The Ugly Stepsister is a nuanced film that explores the pressures felt by women due to society’s beauty standards. The cinematography pulls you into a different time and place and the acting is superb. The story takes its time to build on the social commentary and critique of standards and ideas that have a hold on us even today. And all of this comes crashing down in a brutal and visceral display of violence that is meant to drive the point home…and it does. The Ugly Stepsister is a fantastic tale worth a watch and a rewatch, just to make sure we get the point.
- RickMay 14, 2025A retelling of a classic fairytale with a nice mix of body horror that makes you flinch and almost vomit? Sign me up.
- rg9400May 16, 2025The Ugly Stepsister is a Norwegian reimagining of Cinderella. The movie juxtaposes some beautiful cinematography and set design with body horror that escalates as the movie goes on, designed to get the viewer to squeam. Its critique of beauty standards brings to mind something like The Substance, but without the glitz. The problem is that it doesn't have the propulsive narrative thrust to make it a super engaging watch. The body horror sequences are hard to look away from for sure, and they definitely made me cringe. However, I did not care at all for the main character, and the themes surrounding the societal pressure she was facing felt a bit muddled at times. Part of this is the Cinderella trappings, which add another aspect to the story that I think weakens its message. I did find the tone surprisingly comedic, with some moments that made me laugh despite what was happening to the main character. Overall, it's a nice looking movie with some body horror that shows the extreme lengths people will go to alter their appearance, but it doesn't have the impact it needs to.
- ichi214May 12, 2025Great performance from Lea Myren as Elvira. Loved the costumes and sets. Interesting angle from a well-tread story. Enjoyed the comedic aspects, but they were also a big source of why as a whole this didn't completely work for me. It's billed as a HORROR film that is streaming on SHUDDER, yet there is VERY LITTLE horror to find. Again, it's primarily a comedy. I'm also not a big fan of psychedelic synth scores in "horror" and/or modern films. The film, while it is a fantasy setting uses costumes, sets, props that mimic actual historic items so the score here is completely out of place for me. It's also a bit inconsistent.
- fraggle67May 10, 2025A truer telling of the Brothers Grimm tale. They would be proud.
- Matthias_812April 19, 2025Finally we get a genuine horror Disney/public domain spin off that actually attempts legitimate film production. The Ugly Stepsister takes on the tale Cinderella through the view of the ugy stepsister. It's not body horror but there are some drastic body modifications that will make one squirm. Beauty is pain.
