- stuhannafordMay 10, 2025Extraordinary. Packed full of metaphor for those with an eye for such things. A tale of humanity for those that simply want to be moved and entertained in equal measure. As is so often the case with a Del Toro film, the wonder and fantasy grabs the attention of your eyes, whilst the mind has all the good, and bad, of what makes us human, reflected back at you.
- M08YJanuary 7, 2026I really wanted to hate this film... but I have to admit that it's a work of art. For some reason, seeing everyone losing their minds about this film 10 years ago really soured me on it. However, much like Inglorious Bastards... I am forced to admit it's excellence. Shape of Water is a graceful story of a somewhat unconventional woman finding herself in a truly unconventional romance. Naturally there are also Russian Spies, Compassionate scientists and shady government men to spice things up. The casting is truly superb, Sally Hawkins and Michael Shannon really knocked it out of the park. Even Octavia Spencer managed to not annoy me at all in this role. Yes, there is fish sex. I don't understand it, The film really bends the laws of physics to make it work... but just roll with it and you'll have a great time. NOW. The 4K bluray. It's superb. The HDR is truly amazing. I've not seen a bluray with such excellent use of colour before. It was a genuine pleasure on the eye. The audio was fine.
