The Rover is a bleak piece of science fiction that focuses more on the remnants of a society than on the catastrophe that led to its demise. David Michôd explores the edge of the world, and there are few distractions from the existential emptiness of the central characters. Guy Pearce is magnetic in a role that requires little dramatic range, and Robert Pattinson continues his post–Twilight renaissance in one of the most emotionally challenging parts of his career. The two actors have great chemistry, and their uneasy rapport anchors the film’s austere narrative. It is not that The Rover lacked appeal for me, but it could not deliver on its promising premise due to its glacial pace and emotionally detached storytelling. I was constantly underwhelmed by the film’s insistence on being a character-driven drama rather than an action movie. Nevertheless, David Michôd deserves kudos for his commitment to the idea of the film being a taut psychological study set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. It is easy to get caught up in the movie’s stark beauty and admire the emotional restraint of the leading actors. I did not find any scene too slow or pointless, and every frame serves the narrative’s minimalist design. In retrospect, I can point to countless moments in The Rover that almost worked. Overall, the film is a confident, well-crafted exercise in survival horror that knows what it wants to be.
