- Patrick Wai24. maj 2026The Rope Curse is engaging enough, and I did enjoy the glimpses of rural Taiwan and the ritual details, which at least make the movie feel rooted in something more interesting than its actual script. The setup of a grieving girl and her clout-chasing boyfriend trying to turn a curse into content is solid, and even outside reviews noted the atmosphere and suspense work better than the originality. But once the movie has to cash in its ideas, it mostly comes up with the horror equivalent of loose change. The story is decent, a little scary at times, and just engaging enough to keep you watching, but the ending is stupid in that special horror-movie way where everyone involved seems to lose ten IQ points for the plot’s convenience. Other reviewers were kinder, calling it an enjoyable but predictable ghost story, which feels right, except I’d add that it never becomes good enough to rise above “pretty decent folklore horror with a dumb finish.”
