The most down to earth and horror esque of the Purge movies. It's pretty different from what this franchise would become, but I like this one as well. It's much smaller in scale but it works well.

Such a great premise and that’s really what carries most of it. It builds tension well early on, and once things start going bad there are some genuinely effective moments. Ethan Hawke does a solid job too and helps keep it grounded. That said, the movie nearly loses me because of the kid — he’s incredibly annoying, and the decision to let a completely blood-soaked stranger into your family’s house is one of those moments that feels so unbelievably dumb it takes you out of it. It feels forced just to move the story along. Still a fun watch for the concept alone, but it really could’ve used sharper writing.

A great movie that puts a little bit of fear into how people perceive others and what could happen if they had a bit more power (only time will tell).

The Purge is an interesting film that begs the question "what would you do if for one night only there were no laws?" would you still keep your morals? It's "The trolley problem" in movie form. I'm not sure I would have made the same choices that the main characters made because when it comes down to it, it's either you or them. Nobody has or would hesitate to kill this family. So it doesn't make sense that they wouldn't give up this one guy to save the family. But again it comes down to morals, what they are and are not willing to do, the lines they won't cross. I feel it would have been more interesting had they originally given the guy up only to have the villains of the story go back on their word and try to kill all of them anyway. However that being said this is an very entertaining film that is not so far-fetched which makes it terrifying because it's very plausible. I really like how the house is big so it doesn't make you feel like you're claustrophobic, due to it's size it makes you feel like you're in a playground and it gives all the characters a lot of room to play in. Ethan Hawke's performance in this was very well done and very believable. Rhys wakefield is completely captivating and creepy. I'm not sure I would classify it as a horror as it feels just like a very intense Thriller to me, but I love Thrillers so this is great! The only thing I was really disappointed with and I felt that they actually missed an opportunity is having a panic room, so you have this world class state-of-the-art security system for this house, a very big expensive house I might add and you don't have a Panic Room? That part didn't make sense.

So I finally saw the movie that started it all and... Well it was better than the others. It does what BlumHouse does best: character-driven, lower budget horror with a unique premise. That said, the premise--that everyone's REALLY HAPPY about a world where one day a year you can kill your neighbors with impunity... Followed, presumably, by everyone just forgetting and forgiving the next day?!--is so unbelievable that it doesn't work as anything other than a thought exercise. Oh: SPOILER: and white people are really bad. Thank goodness there's a nice black person to save them.

Excellent idea excellent execution with a limited budget and satisfying finale… What else could you ask for? Scarier in 2025 than it was 10 years ago Excellent
