Mel Brooks delivers a patient, incredibly smart escalation of a single offensive premise that manages to mock both pearl-clutching taboos and lazy shock humor all at once. Anchored by an early, wonderfully familiar Gene Wilder performance, the film's absurd descent into chaos ends on a perfect punchline about the liberating joy of finally breaking free from the prison of routine.
