- Beau DiermanJuly 6, 2026One finds in The Phoenician Scheme that rare sort of picture whose meticulous, almost autistic symmetries of frame and deadpan delivery somehow open onto something deeper than the usual Wes Anderson confection, a quietly devastating meditation on legacy and estrangement wrapped in the gaudy packaging of international intrigue and father-daughter reconciliation. Benicio del Toro’s industrialist, half-tyrant and half-wounded animal, navigates assassination attempts and absurd business schemes with a gravelly gravitas that feels lived-in, while his novice daughter stands as this still, moral counterpoint amid the whirring machinery of capital and coincidence; the whole thing accrues a strange, cumulative tenderness, the kind that sneaks up on you precisely because the film never seems to be begging for it. It is, in the end, a small triumph of style pressed into the service of something recognizably human, the sort of picture one leaves feeling not sold but quietly enlarged.

- Tyler SJune 23, 2025Wes Anderson has been one of my favorite directors since I was a kid. Every time a new Anderson movie comes out it is an event for me. Phoenician Scheme didn't disappoint, all the quirky characters, dialogue, precise cinematography and set decorations were all there in peak form. Without a doubt the biggest standout performance was Michael Cera's Bjorn, he was made for an Anderson movie, hopefully he makes his way into more Wes movies in the future. Funniest scene was teased in the trailer, it involves basketball, Tom Hanks and Bryan Cranston. It had my packed theater laughing in unison. Last but not least Benicio Del Toro is on screen nearly the entire runtime and he carries the whole endeavor perfectly. For Wes fans this a must watch at the show. I loved it and can't wait to get my hands on the inevitable release of the Criterion 4K. 👍👍 9/10
