Isle of Jersley, slutningen af anden verdenskrig. Grace bor sammen med sine to børn i en victoriansk villa på en fjern ø. Tre nye tjenestefolk ankommer og mærkelige ting og sager begynder at ske. Graces datter fortæller, at hun har set og talt med en uforklarlig skabning, der bevæger sig rundt i alle husets værelser. Først tror Grace ikke på historien, men efterhånden tvinges hun til at konfrontere uhyggen i det knirkende hus.

    Great acting and an interesting concept, but the slow pacing, confusing plot, and underwhelming payoff made it a boring watch.

    One of the better twists I’ve seen in cinema. Really holds up well as a 2 decade old film. I feel like it could be set today, or 100 year ago and still work

    That was a good movie, it reminded me of "the 6th sense" which is another classic, I loved it.

    i honestly felt pretty disengaged from this film for a good chunk of the middle. the beginning sets up a fun premise with a morbid atmosphere, but something about the middle hour just felt so very familiar in a way that bordered on derivative. it feels like it was heavily influenced by henry james’ the turn of the screw, which isn’t a bad thing, but i think having experienced various adaptations of that story all my life i was a bit weary of it here. thankfully, amenábar’s directing and kidman’s performance pulled me in by the third act, and the conclusion was very satisfying. denial and love and longing exist at the core of all good ghost stories, and this really captured that.

    Slightly slow fuse, but you are gripped until the end. The acting, camera angle choices, and creepy score make for a chilling experience. Several moments had my body filled with tingles. Watching in surround sound is the only way to do this one. Enjoy!
