The Old Man and the Sea Ratings & Reviews
Mister Arn
May 23, 2025
I found it hard to believe this film was an Academy Award nominee for Cinematography. The film was shot on a stage, which I found obvious and distracting. They attempted to bring the literary beauty of the book to the movie, but I didn't feel it worked.
The Catholic World
Moira Walsh
The emotional impact is second hand and the narrative seems unnecessarily padded.
Film Frenzy
Matt Brunson
A real curio, a thoughtful movie that entertains without ever really convincing.
Miami Herald
George Bourke
There is as much raw excitement as you'd find at a bullfight or in a Hitchcock suspense movie.
Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews
Dennis Schwartz
The film can't do proper justice to the literary masterpiece.
Sarasota Herald-Tribune
Christopher Lloyd
The 1958 film, made six years after publication of the book, is a faithful adaptation - virtually a word-for-word copy of Hemingway's dialogue and prose - that is not without its faults.

Steve Crum
Talky, but not surprising, since it is based on Hemingway story of old man (Tracy) musing about catching huge fish.
Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)
Ken Hanke
Tracy with a hokey accent floats in a studio tank for what seems like forever.
Movie Metropolis
John J. Puccio
Tracy reading Hemingway's lines...brings to them a simple dignity and nobility that is hard to match.
