- HaHaHarvey44July 24, 2026Christopher Nolan decides the greatest adventure story ever written needs a sensitivity read, a diversity quota, and a three-hour runtime to lecture you about how violence is bad, actually. The casting is an act of cultural vandalism. Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy – the woman whose face launched a thousand ships and who Homer explicitly describes as fair-skinned – is the kind of decision that only makes sense if your primary audience is awards voters and lunatic left activists. Elliot Page as Sinon is pure ideological cosplay: a biological woman playing a Greek warrior in a story that has zero need for modern gender politics. The rest of the ensemble is the usual Hollywood mix of American and British faces with almost no actual Greek or Mediterranean blood in sight. Complete lack of self-awareness. Visually, the film is grey, overcast and honestly not very interesting. The armor looks like it was designed by someone who saw a museum exhibit once. The ships, the helmets, the entire aesthetic feel Northern European and miserable instead of sun-bleached and Mediterranean. Nolan shot the most famous voyage in literature like it was taking place in a depressed corner of Scotland. The one exception is the Cyclops sequence, which actually looks like something out of a myth. Everything else is muted, dreary, and aggressively un-epic. The dialogue is a special kind of tone-deaf. Characters drop modern phrasing and flat American/British accents into a supposedly fantastical epic like they’re ordering coffee. "Mom.", “Dad.” “Ten years on this fucking beach. Let’s go home!” It’s linguistic heresy. Combined with Nolan’s usual sound-mixing – dialogue buried under score, explosions that still somehow feel quiet – it becomes exhausting to sit through. Pacing is glacial. Odysseus himself has been sanded down into something softer and more reflective than the cunning, ruthless survivor of the poem. Nolan appears to have drawn more inspiration from Emily Wilson’s 2017 feminist translation of the poem, the one that reframes Odysseus as a cOmPliCaTeD mAn and softens the epic’s classical edges, than from Homer himself. Robert Pattinson is the only actor who brings any real presence – he at least looks like he belongs in this world and isn’t just collecting a paycheck while the culture war rages around him. The Cyclops is the only set piece that delivers any genuine awe. Everything else is self-serious, overlong, and poisoned by the desperate need to be relevant (meet the DEI quota to qualify for an Oscar) in 2026 instead of timeless. Two stars, and that’s being generous. One for Pattinson, one for the Cyclops. The rest is a $250 million reminder that even Christopher Nolan can be brought low by the same DEI/ThE mEsSaGe rot. Add it to the list of the forgettable woke dross of the last 10 years.

- Patrick D.August 15, 2026was so excited for this movie. It was probably the most hyped I've been for a film in a long time. I had very high hopes for it. I read the Fagles translation in the run up to the release and I absolutely loved it. I couldn't put it down. I love Christopher Nolan's filmography (except Tenet. That movie sucked big time.), and I'm probably a lot harsher on his stuff than every other movie I watch. That being said, The Odyssey has its merits... but bottom line, I was really disappointed with it. I was just indifferent to it by the end. The best way to describe it is "unauthentic" or "not immersive". I could go into all these technical critiques and analyze how faithful it was to the source material and whatnot, but ultimately it just didn't immerse me in the Ancient Greek Mythology whatsoever. The moments when it did pull me in, something or someone inevitably snapped me out of it. Some of that had to do with the the actors' performances, but it mostly had to do with the writing and casting... and I know the casting topic has been beaten to death, but you'd be an idiot if you said having 1,200 B.C. Greece looking like 2026 LA doesn't subtract from the authenticity of a film about the Homeric poem about the Trojan War. At one point in the film Nolan has Himesh Patel say "We're the Greeks" to the Greek guy who was the one literally speaking to him in Greek. I mean, come on. That's laughably corny. And you know, whatever. That one thing alone doesn't ruin the entire film, but there's countless instances of this which ultimately prevented me from ever getting fully pulled into the story without chuckling about some stupid self-inflicted blunder every 10 minutes. As for the actors, Matt Damon and Tom Holland were just awful in this. The hallmark of a good actor is pulling you in, immersing you in another world and let you suspend your disbelieve and make you feel as if you're actually watching that character. I wanted to feel like I was actually watching Odysseus and Telemachus... and look, I am by no means saying they're bad actors, but I just felt like I was watching Tom Holland and Matt Damon on screen the entire time. This issue was exponentially compounded by the modern dialogue and dog shit script writing. Phrases like "let's go", "Dad", and "Fuck off" in a modern sounding American accent is objectively not immersive for the source material. "Our age of bronze is collapsing" is a line in this movie. No joke. Christopher Nolan actually read this line and thought it was a good line to put in Odysseus's climactic monologue. This stuff is unacceptable. Nolan gets a lot of shit for his writing in The Dark Knight Rises and rightfully so. This film was MUCH more egregious. It's not Tenet level bad, but it's certainly in the lower half of his filmography. The thing that bugs me about all this is I can look past subversive creative decisions, questionable artistic choices, and other undesired tradeoffs, but you have to immerse me in your world when it's all said and done. Otherwise it isn't an 'undesired tradeoff', it's a failure to execute, plain and simple. This movie is probably a 4/5 max if I'm being as objective as possible, but I give it a 3/5 relative to Nolan's other films. I honestly doubt I'll ever watch it again.
- lullas123August 8, 2026i really enjoyed waching it but it doesn't feel like the odyssey. the king Ulysses isn't like that. he suppost to be intelligent, the most cunning man in the history, but in this film he's empty. my circe IS NOT like a bad which, she's smart, beautiful. she's literally a queen. queen penelope's amazing. i really like her and how the acress interpreted her. polifemo's scene was terribole.
- August 2, 2026When I checked some stuff about the movie a few days before it was released, I saw a bunch of people that had already reviewed this movie and saying that it was GOING to suck or that it’s GOING to be terrible, like you can’t review a movie before you’ve seen it. I watched the movie a few days ago and I thought it was great, and I don’t see any reason to why people would hate on it before it released. Sure it’s long, but so are many movies that people like; Lord Of The Rings, The Godfather, Titanic, and the list goes on. And yeah, it does make significant changes to Homer’s book, now I haven’t read the book though I know a lot about it but here’s the thing many people fail to understand: The Odyssey is one of the most complex and big stories ever, and if you’re gonna adapt it into film, you gotta make significant changes in order for it to work. Otherwise it would be like 4 hours long which i think people wouldn’t like any better. Don’t review a film unless you’ve seen it.
