Relentlessly bleak, but excellent revenge drama, the British were an awful lot.

I’m giving The Nightingale a solid 8 out of 10—an absolute gut-punch of a film that’s worth every second of its wild, harrowing ride. From the opening scene, it seized my attention like a vice and never let go, which is saying something considering my attention span rivals that of a caffeinated four-year-old. This movie doesn’t mess around; it hooks you fast and drags you through its brutal, beautiful chaos without apology. If you’re on the fence about watching it, stop hesitating—just dive in, grab your favorite comfort food (you’ll need it), and buckle up. You’ll be thanking me later when you’re still reeling from its impact. Fair warning, though: this is not a film for the faint-hearted—or the kids. With its unflinching depiction of violence and raw emotional weight, it’s a story that demands a mature audience ready to wrestle with its darkness. Directed by Jennifer Kent, The Nightingale blends stunning cinematography with powerhouse performances, particularly from Aisling Franciosi, whose portrayal of Clare is as haunting as it is unforgettable. Set against the bleak backdrop of 1820s Tasmania, it’s a revenge tale that doesn’t pull punches, weaving in themes of colonialism and survival that linger long after the credits roll. Trust me, it’s a slow burn that builds to a crescendo you won’t see coming. So, stock up on snacks, steel yourself, and let this one take you for a ride.

“Welcome to the world - full of misery from top to bottom.” - Clare Another reason why we need more women directors! From the “Babadook” to this. Cannot wait for Jennifer Kent’s next film. This was a crazy brutal thrill ride from start to finish.
