- naren shenoyMay 12, 2026This another one of those movies I had heard about but had never had an opportunity to watch. Came across this and thought I would give it a go. Right off the bat, there is a certain way movies of the 70s and 80s set a mood that is just not seen in cinema anymore. And there is a comfort in silence in this movie, that was a product of the times, and I found added to the atmosphere. A neat little “who dunnit”, that does not end simply with solving the case. Many have stated the book had far more to offer, I cannot comment on that. But as a fan of old school cinema, I enjoyed this. As an added bonus, I did not realize that a very young Christian Slater was in this, but there were some other actors here that were immediately recognizable, including Ron Perlman in likely one of his first roles in “monster makeup”. Worth a watch if you like older movies and slow burns.
- Tom MajskiNovember 30, 202514th century Shardlake style murder mystery set in an Abbey starring Sean Connery? What's not to like? So ok, its fine, good even. The movie itself is a little plodding and the mysteries never really twist and turn enough to justify the run time. But the cast and setting are both excellent. Whilst Connery is as good as you'd hope, he doesn't being anything new. Young Christian Slater and Ron Pearlman stand out in a stellar supporting cast however. A rag tag band of slightly odd fellows with distinct personalities and looks give a good eerie vibe to the whole affair. This is doubled down on by fantastic location shoots, lighting and mood. Its all wonderful strange and creepy whilst feeling wholly authentic to the era. Enjoyable and worth watching but it doesn't reach the highs for me that it seems to for some.
- ZokkiieJanuary 21, 2026This film takes its time, but it’s got a lot of substance. Sean Connery is brilliant in the lead, and the atmosphere of the monastery really adds to the tension. The mystery is engaging, but it’s the deeper themes about knowledge and faith that really make it stand out. It’s not a fast-paced thriller, though. Some might find the slow pace a bit too much, especially if you’re looking for something more action-driven. But for anyone who enjoys a thoughtful, atmospheric story, it’s definitely worth the watch.
