This animated Netflix adventure follows the charismatic Monkey and his magical fighting Stick on a quest to defeat 100 demons, an eccentric Dragon King and most importantly his own ego. It’s fast paced, family friendly and full of vibrant set pieces that lean into Chinese mythology with a modern twist. Jimmy O. Yang voices Monkey with swagger, Bowen Yang steals scenes as the flamboyant Dragon King and the supporting cast adds charm. The animation pops, the fight choreography is slick and the story moves like a Saturday morning cartoon with a moral compass. But it’s not all peaches and immortality. The tone wobbles between silly and sincere and the emotional beats don’t always land. Critics are split, some praise its visual flair, others find it forgettable. It’s fun, but not deep. A single use distraction with moments of inspired chaos. Still, if you’re in the mood for myth, mischief and a monkey who learns (eventually) that humility matters, it’s worth a spin, especially on a lazy weekend.
