The Monkey Ratings & Reviews
- Michiel1d agoMeeeh..... I love all kinds of horrors, but this one... for some reason I just dont feel or see it. Some gore deaths and weird storyline that ends with about nothing. Didnt like it at all, the trailer is better then the movie.
- Matt Davis1d agoHeads will roll, bodies will explode, no one is safe from the monkey. This thing is damn funny which was a nice surprise and is the blood fest it promised to be. Take it at face value and enjoy because nit picking will only kill the fun. Osgood Perkins is on an absolute roll and doesn't seem to be slowing down.
- Kain5d agoi really have no idea what i just watched. um there’s gore if you into that stuff… and uhhh yeah that’s all i have.
- Milton7d agoWas an average horror movie. I think it would have been much better if it stuck to either a comedic or serious tone, instead of trying to bridge the two.
- ScottFebruary 20, 2025A spiritual successor to Final Destination. Never thought I could, or would, call a movie about generational trauma genuinely funny and yet here we are.
- Brad Long7d agoFor a movie to have such hype to be so trash after the fact, it was just disappointing.
- Scott7d agoIt's okay, not one of my favorite flicks, especially created from a King story. Parts of the movie were boring and I found myself making food more than watching. The storyline was decent I guess, but it lacked something I can't explain. Maybe the cast could have been more interesting. It boils down to the cast to keep people engaged. Something was lacking here for me and everyone is different. Good luck with this one.

- Jacob O’NealMarch 27, 2025I was a fan of Osgood Perkins after seeing Longlegs. I had seen his other films, but that was the one that made me stand up and really take notice of his work more than any other. The Monkey came along about a year after and was based on a Stephen King story from his Graveyard Shift collection. I was excited about seeing it being a fan of both King and Perkins. To top it off, the film was produced by James Wan’s Atomic Monster production company. The film stars Theo James, Tatiana Maslany (She Hulk, Orphan Black), Elijah Wood, Adam Scott, Perkins, Rohan Campbell (Halloween Ends) and Sarah Levy (Schitt’s Creek). The movie is about a toy monkey and the havoc it causes. It fits into the sub-genre of King’s work being about cursed objects. It is shown at the start being in the possession of Adam Scott, the father of twin boys that the film centers around. He tries to get rid of the monkey and when he realizes that he can’t, he disappears and abandons his family to keep them safe. The brothers seem to harbor a lot of misplaced anger, hating each other rather than where it should be. We then see Ned (Theo James) as an adult, now protecting his own child by only seeing him one week a year. This particular week, he has to confront his past, his angry brother and the monkey. The deaths in the film are much in the same tone as Final Destination, played kind of lightly and, at times, humorously. Overall, Perkins directed the film well and kept it engaging. But coming on the heels of the incredible Longlegs, it felt like a disappointment. But is that fair to say. I actually plan to watch this again soon because I don’t want my opinion tainted by his previous film. Perkins is a very talented writer and director. His edict with this film was that he wanted it to be more light in tone. In that way, he succeeded quite a bit more than he failed. Although it felt disjointed at times and even a little rushed, it was fun and weird in ways that reminded me a bit of David Lynch mixed with 70’s schlock horror films. Overall, it was a fun but flawed ride with some creative kills that I don’t want to spoil. Perkins, like his father before him, is someone I’m willing to watch no matter what he does. And Campbell’s Joey Ramone-esque look and performance was a lot of fun to watch. I’d say this is a worthwhile film to watch, even if it doesn’t live up to its potential.
- DJFebruary 22, 2025Big horror buff, just see my activity, and I appreciate all forms of horror. Funny, sad, violent, mind games, splatter etc. etc. and I really wanted to love this as a popcorn splatterfest but it fell short of even my lukewarm expectations. The kills were fun but rushed. The dark comedy for whatever reason just didn’t seem to fit the film. I also love most of Osgood Perkins work (Blackcoat and Long Legs). Just fell short. Do I recommend it as a couch watch? Sure, but don’t expect much. Premise, a cursed toy monkey kills randomly every-time you turn the crank on it. Pretty simple.
- Dakota RickelMarch 26, 2025The pace is slow, Theo’s character is boring, and the kills are obnoxious. Not for me.
- djaggMarch 5, 2025Some of the jokes fall flat but overall a very funny film. Enjoyed the obvious Hitchcock tribute but I wonder how much longer Oz wants to remind everyone he’s a nepo-baby. It’s tough to hold it against him, but Theo James is so damn handsome I honestly can’t take anything he says seriously. Or maybe he’s just a subpar actor. I just wasn’t a fan of the understated emotions but I get it - the dude’s repressed. Enjoyed the other performances of people I wasn’t very familiar with! Sarah Levy and Oz were a humorous couple for how long they lasted. And Adam Scott and Elijah Wood were solid in guest roles. The girl bullies were…an interesting choice, and the false resolution featured some (possibly intentional) horrendous dialogue. Overall tho, I think Oz is comfortable with the groove he’s found and I am enjoying his work! Including a trailer for your next project at the end is curious! Gonna give it a rare qualifier and say it fits between 3 and 3.5* so ima officially say 3.25* Watched at Derby Plaza Theaters
- ahwooMarch 26, 2025Nothing ground breaking here but still entertaining.
- Brad LedbetterMarch 26, 2025Final Destination by way of Stephen King. This movie has some absolutely brutal kills, but remains filled with campy fun. Was five stars for the first two thirds, but loses a star for the relatively poor final act.
- JB-FlixMarch 25, 2025Not as good as I thought it would be. Not very scary, not even very funny. Plenty of gore, it was alright.
