The Mattachine Family Ratings & Reviews
Autostraddle
Sa'iyda Shabazz
As much as I enjoyed the movie, I will say that I found the female characters incredibly reductive and one-dimensional. And given the fact that this is a wholly queer film, it was really disheartening to see.
Awards Daily
Joey Moser
Mattachine is infused with a lot of emotional intelligence and its cast brings a wonderful naturalism to the material.
Should I See It
Michael Ward
...a great performance by Nico Tortorella carries us through, wonderfully supported by the Vallentines compassionate approach to storytelling.
Mediaversity Reviews
Li Lai
Given the pressing need for a wider range of movies that happen to feature LGBTQ relationships, The Mattachine Family should be embraced.
Film Threat
Andrew Stover
Despite focusing on the joys and hardships of love and family, the film retains a warm tone. Vallentine's drama is a pleasant gathering of friends and romantic partners as they share tender moments and form an unbreakable family.

Totorella delivers a sharp, nuanced turn as a gay man trying to figure out what he truly wants...Totorella and the truly gifted and invigorating Emily Hampshire, as Thomas's bestie, make this endeavor worthwhile.
But Why Tho? A Geek Community
Jason Flatt
The Mattachine Family is a touching and appreciated reminder, especially because it ultimately doesn't end the way I thought it should have, that we can find the greatest joys in our lives when we can finally let go of what can't be...
Chicago Reader
Andrea Thompson
Bring tissues, because Andy Vallentine's The Mattachine Family packs plenty of feels.
Eye for Film
Jennie Kermode
This is one of those very Californian tales in which the problems that most people in the world have to deal with simply don't exist.

... a sensitive exploration of what's involved in building a non-traditional family, where there are no assumptions that you can be sure are shared and there's also not much history to be used as a model.
Paul's Trip to the Movies
Paul McGuire Grimes
I love that movies like The Mattachine Family exist as it gives a voice and holds space for queer families out there whose stories aren't always told.
North Shore Movies
Daniel M. Kimmel
"The Mattachine Family" shows that we've come a long way from a time when a character being gay was the "issue" the film needed to address. Instead, it succeeds in speaking about friendship and family in ways that ought to connect to everyone.

The universality of love, family, and community are on display for Pride Month! This also speaks to couples who have differing standards as to what they want in their relationship and potential child rearing. Wherever their going, I'm going their way!
Boston Movie News

Tortorella is such a natural that it is easy to forget that Thomas is fictional. Whether he struggles from holding back tears to just putting his head on his hand, his performance feels organic and lived in as if it were indulgent, warm comfort food
The Pink Lens
Ben Turner
Rose-tinted and saccharine sweet, its hyper-realistic style is tainted by a drenching of idealised nostalgia that leaves this contemplative mumblecore somewhat lacking any real substance.
