Was eager to check out Daniel Kaluuya’s directorial debut and while I found it to be a little bit of a mixed bag as a whole, there’s enough here that I really liked that has me at least interested in seeing what Kaluuya has in store for the future. What I love most is the sci-fi dystopian London he’s built that looks believably futuristic blowing up the CGi budget. The film brushes up against themes of gentrification, class divide, and community, but really focuses the drama on a pseudo (or perhaps not pseudo) father-son relationship of Izi and Benji played by Kane Robinson and Jedaiah Bannerman. When Benji’s mom dies and he attends the funeral at Izi’s work, Benji notices Izi paying his respects to his deceased mother and begins to suspect that Izi could be his father. A new found family could jeopardize Izi’s chances for survival and limit his upward mobility. Again, really loved some of the pieces here, but didn’t completely fall in with the overall story. Kaluuya, though, impressed me with his directorial vision. Worth checking out.

The writing is so strong and the performances so good that they feel like real people.

I like this film quite a lot. It's sharp, it's fast and also slow.

This is a compelling sci-fi movie, one that does not pander to the usual expectations.

But it's a film that is constantly grounded by its impactful, human tale.

Every part of The Kitchen, though set in the future, is a love letter to the neighbourhoods the filmmakers grew up in.

More a sacrifice bunt than a homerun, 'The Kitchen' is a commendable, if tame, addition to the dystopian sci-fi library that gets by on pure heart.

For all the near future stuff and all the sci-fi elements, it's a character drama.

What makes The Kitchen feel so distinct is the way its subtle touches of speculative futurism work to highlight realities about how at-risk communities are surveilled and how riots end up becoming people's organic response to state-sponsored violence.

This isn't a believable utopia, then, but a magical one... [And] its ineffective placement within the film's otherwise grounded dystopian world leaves viewers consistently questioning its legitimacy and believability.

It's easy to respect and admire the filmmakers' ambition, intent and visual execution, but the material needs a more steely and confident approach, a harsher contrast of violence and love to elevate the film from watchable to truly memorable.

Tavares and Kaluuya have realised a truly compelling and realistic dystopian film that doesn't ignore our present, with strong performances and savvy world-building

"The Kitchen" almost reads like a damning premonition of what's to come as the gap between rich and poor widens to even more damning degrees.

The direction, by Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya, is sure and unfussy, spinning a warmly humane story of cross-generational connection.
Associated Press
Lindsey Bahr
A well-executed film about a familiar kind of urban dystopian nightmare. It is, ironically, sunnier than the Los Angeles of Blade Runner, but the mood is as dire.
Rolling Stone
Jack Francis
While it runs you through the gamut of emotions, you'll end up full of warmth while also unmistakably concerned. It will also leave you pondering one other question: Is there anything Daniel Kaluuya can't do?
IndieWire
Sophie Monks Kaufman
If the relationship drama at its core doesn't fully connect with the elegant brutalism of its visual language, there is, nevertheless, a lot to admire in both aspects.
Observer
Emily Zemler
Kaluuya and Tavares aren't interested in sentimentality. Instead, the film serves as haunting "what if" scenario, offering viewers a glimpse of a possible future.
