Creepy as hell, in multiple senses of the word.

“Oh, look! It’s a lovely spider! And it’s eating a butterfly! 😇” Been tryna watch this for the better part of a decade and stumbled on a 4K Criterion restoration on YouTube. Good work, algorithm! Haunting and beautiful, just like the opening song featured throughout. Also the little girl is just so mad creepy-cute lmfao the boy too but I want to fight him I do not know if I knew Capote wrote this screenplay! Started this at 3:30 AM yawning like hell and boy was I perked up by 4:00! The cinematography and direction overall are absolutely stunning. Also the ghosts have such an evil look. I love it. There’s a moving shot halfway through during a convo between Miss Giddens and Mrs. Grose and I was so in awe of the shot I had to rewind to catch the dialogue…..twice Ngl gotta start pacing out the paranoia / gaslighting themes in films. I’ve been getting too high “Sometimes one can’t help imagining things…”

The sense of unease, built up consistently from the very start, leaves us feeling uneasy as we wait for something that is bound to happen. The performances are superb, with the two children deserving special mention – child roles so well directed and performed are a rare find. Perverse undertones add to the unease, whilst supernatural elements serve to confuse – reality blends with the unreal, making it difficult to piece the story together.

This is a well-written ghost or psychological thriller, depending on how you view the movie. It moves a little slow, but the acting and script carry you through to the dramatic finish.
