November 2025Set in a retro futuristic 1979, this indie oddball follows two former superheroes trying to reclaim their Titan badges, devices that once gave them powers, purpose and a place in Professor Ruckus Mandulbaum’s dysfunctional family of misfits. Think The Umbrella Academy meets Wes Anderson with a dash of Napoleon Dynamite awkwardness. Cary Elwes plays Professor Ruckus like a mix of Willy Wonka and a washed up Bond villain, eccentric, manipulative and oddly endearing. The film leans hard into vintage aesthetics: grainy filters, analog tech and a soundtrack that feels like it was pulled from a forgotten 70's sci-fi vinyl. It’s quirky, heartfelt and occasionally uneven, but that’s part of the charm. The action is minimal, the pacing meanders and the tone swings between satire and sincerity. But when it clicks, it really clicks. There’s a surprising emotional core beneath the pastel chaos, about family, identity and the cost of being “special.” The Hyperions is a lo-fi superhero story with heart, style, and just enough weirdness to earn its spot.

Als Professor Ruckus Mandulbaum in den 1960er Jahren die von ihm entwickelte Titan Badge einsetzt, um bei normalen Menschen außergewöhnliche Kräfte zu entfesseln, entstehen die ersten Superhelden – die Hyperions. Fast zwanzig Jahre später soll die dritte Generation dieser Helden auf den Plan treten. Allerdings sind Vista und Ansel, zwei der Original-Hyperions, mit ihrem Schicksal als in Rente geschickte Superhelden nicht einverstanden. Sie brechen ins Museum ihres Erfinders ein, um die Titan Badges zurückzuerobern. Die Aktion gerät außer Kontrolle und endet in einer Geiselnahme, umgeben von SWAT-Teams und Kameras. Die Situation droht zu eskalieren, und der Professor kann nicht mehr vermittelnd eingreifen. Doch Vista und Ansel sind nicht die einzigen Hyperions, und ein neuer Gegner taucht auf, der eigene Pläne verfolgt. In diesem Chaos ist das Vertrauen auf eine harte Probe gestellt.
