The Gospel According to Matthew
Directed by Regardt van den Bergh- Charles LondonApril 24, 2025This 4-hour-plus film recites the entire Gospel of Matthew word-for-word through a combination of narrations and dramatizations. Frankly, one could read Matthew faster while forming their own visuals. Since all verses are included, we experience the uplifting ones, but also the more tedious ones. No screenwriter discretion is exercised. It's everything, including every parable sometimes one after the other, resulting in overload with no time for reflection. My biggest and best takeaway will be the Sermon on the Mount. Bruce Marchiano's exuberance here, in portraying Jesus as a joyful man with a sense of playfulness and humor, is refreshing. Most other key scenes however, have been done better by other pictures with bigger budgets.
