While it often gets overshadowed by the studio's more complex films, it succeeds by stripping the narrative back to its emotional core. The brilliance here lies in a clever narrative flip on the classic "boy and his dog" trope. The film employs a stroke of irony where the dinosaurs are the articulate, civilized family units, while the humans are the silent, feral creatures scuttling about. This dynamic forces the story to rely on pure emotion, gesture, and visual storytelling rather than dialogue, creating a bond between Arlo and Spot that hits surprisingly hard. It is a warm, adventurous, and unfairly maligned gem that proves you don't need words to tell a powerful story.

In einer Welt, die nie von einem Meteor getroffen wurde, sind die Dinosaurier nicht ausgestorben, sondern leben weiter auf der Erde. Zu ihnen gehört auch der gutmütige Apatosaurus Arlo, der zwar stets versucht, seine Familie tatkräftig zu unterstützen, sich jedoch vor allem und jedem fürchtet. Als er eines Tages aber in einen reißenden Fluss fällt und erst weit entfernt von seinem Zuhause wieder an Land gespült wird, muss er sich in einer ihm fremden Umgebung seinen Ängsten stellen. Dabei ist er allerdings nicht allein, hat er kurz zuvor doch Bekanntschaft mit dem wilden Menschenjungen Spot gemacht, der ganz im Gegensatz zu Arlo vor keiner Gefahr zurückschreckt. Auch wenn der junge Dinosaurier anfangs nicht viel mit dem knurrenden Energiebündel anfangen kann, entwickelt sich zwischen den beiden schnell eine ungewöhnliche Freundschaft, die ihnen hilft, das turbulente Abenteuer zu bestehen, das vor ihnen liegt.
Die Hauptcharaktere in Arlo & Spot sind Momma (voice) (Frances McDormand), Arlo (voice) (Raymond Ochoa), Poppa (voice) (Jeffrey Wright).
