The Golem Ratings & Reviews
Andy
August 24, 2025
A truly special movie. Come for the horror, stay for the story.
Ghastly Grinning
Ryan Larson
The Golem is a gorgeous movie that pays respect to it's roots while also updating the legend, quite terrifyingly, to be relevant with the times. It's a feminist historical set piece that is sure to fcatch your eye, a home run of a debut film.
Cinema Crazed
Emilie Black
Unfortunately, the first part lingers on too long and ends up testing the viewer's patience and care for the characters before the creature shows up and things take a turn for the more interesting.
Gayly Dreadful
Terry Mesnard
It has a deliberate pacing that struggles a tiny bit in the second half, but ratchets up the tension as it careens to its denouement.
Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews
Dennis Schwartz
Richly serves up a parable on Jewish folklore worth savoring.
Film Inquiry
Adam Mock
If paced more efficiently, this could have definitely satisfied a broader audience, but instead, we are left with lackluster horror mixed with a decent drama.
SSG Syndicate
Susan Granger
Suspenseful and supernatural, it's a terror tale of revenge and redemption...heralding a new genre: Jewish Horror.
Film Threat
Bobby LePire
The Golem is creepy, as the cinematography is awash with atmosphere and the use of such a creature is interesting.
Maven's Nest
Nora Lee Mandel
Cheers to The Paz Brothers, and writer Ariel Cohen, for a feminist take on the traditional tale!
KPBS.org
Beth Accomando
The Golem is a promising first effort from Dread and makes me interested in what the Paz brothers may do next.
Journal and Courier (Lafayette, IN)
Bob Bloom
It captures an era in which Jews - as they have throughout history - are persecuted for simply existing and because they make easy scapegoats.
The Hollywood Reporter
John DeFore
The English-language Israeli production may not wow stateside genre fans, but its approach to the source material is emotionally and intellectually sincere, enacted seriously, if not always engrossingly, by cast and crew.
Los Angeles Times
Noel Murray
A well-crafted and idiosyncratic supernatural thriller, the film plays like a mix of "Frankenstein," "The Witch," and some of the Coen brothers' more explicitly Jewish movies.
The Blogging Banshee
Molly Henery
The Golem delivers a unique story rooted in Jewish tradition that is both beautiful and disturbing.
Daily Dead
Patrick Bromley
What makes it special is that it's so culturally specific while at the same time finding a sort of universality that makes the characters sympathetic, their plight relatable.
Mark Leeper's Reviews
Mark R. Leeper
a good movie about a golem and a not-so-good golem movie.
Shockya.com
Harvey S. Karten
A satisfactory re-imagining of the Hebrew myth though unfortunately reduced in resonance with modern horror tropes.
We Live Entertainment
Fred Topel
Franchise Fred would approve a golem franchise. Continue the story of Hanna's village, or visit the golem upon different periods in history, or even modern day. If this is just the origin story, Franchise Fred approves.
Eye for Film
Jennie Kermode
Beyond the central ideas, it's scope is limited, and the final conflict feels rather rushed, but there are the bones of something interesting here.
Film Freak Central
Walter Chaw
It looks like a particularly handsome illustrated volume of fairy tales--and acts like one, too.
