His wife tramples all over his self-esteem as she chooses to sneer at his well-meaning humour rather than laugh at it, and salivates over her obnoxious male colleague rather than look in Clive's direction. Meanwhile, Clive is slowly realising that he and someone else have developed the deeper connection that he's been missing in his life. Well, if that's the case - why not have everyone around for dinner!?
